Packing Tapes: Which Should I Use?
Packing tape (shipping tape), is any pressure-sensitive tape that can be used to seal boxes, shipping cartons, and other goods. Packing tape comes in a variety of varieties, so depending on the situation, some will work better than others. You should select packing tape that covers all of the intended uses because there are many variables that can vary from tape to tape.
Consider the following aspects when choosing the best packing adhesive for your company:
● Weight of package
● Dimensions of the package
● Strength of the carton
● Value of the goods
● Stability of shipment
● Method of delivery
Sometimes, a small distinction in packing tapes that goes unnoticed might greatly enhance your company's operations. Good packing tapes will endure regular use, but subpar tapes will slow down your staff's packing speed and efficiency. Furthermore, it is noteworthy that appropriate application techniques are necessary for even the best shipping tape.
Choose a packing tape with qualities that are appropriate for your company. You may increase efficiency and guarantee excellent package protection by using the appropriate tape for the task. Now let's take a look at the five different kinds of packing tape.
1. CARTON SEALING TAPE
All tapes designed to seal shipping boxes fall under this category; each has unique characteristics and applications. Many application-specific factors can be impacted by slight differences in the tape liner's material, color, and thickness. Your choice of carton sealing tape may include or lack important features like waterproofing, temperature resistance, and noise reduction.
The most noticeable variations are usually the outcome of the particular glue that is applied.
Acrylic
One of the most commonly used, reliable, and affordable carton sealing tapes is acrylic packing tape. The outside markings and labels on corrugated boxes can be seen for up to three years thanks to this tape's clear adhesive, which adheres to the material instantaneously. The temperature range that acrylic packing tape can tolerate is 32 to 150 degrees Fahrenheit. Even in tough situations, with direct sunlight and high humidity, the bond can maintain its performance. The tape's long-lasting surface stickiness will be advantageous for any boxes kept in garages, warehouses, or storage facilities.
Hot Melt
One of the most dependable and flexible tapes for a variety of uses is hot melt packing tape. These three-layer carton sealing tapes are made of synthetic resin adhesive, which forms an instantaneous bind. The exceptional tensile strength of hot melt packing tape makes it one of the best shipping tapes. The adhesive will guarantee that your boxes stay sealed under the demands of transportation.
2. GUMMED PAPER TAPE
One kind of carton sealing tape is gummed paper tape, also known as water-activated paper tape. The starch-based adhesive penetrates the corrugated box and creates a permanent bind between the package and tape when it is activated by water. The box can be torn open by removing the gummed paper tape, which is a wonderful security feature for those who want evidence of tampering.
One or more fiberglass lattices sandwiched between the paper reinforces the majority of gummed paper tapes. The tape will be harder to tear with each more fiberglass lattice. Gummed paper tape that has been reinforced with several layers of fiberglass can hold greater weight and offer greater security. Furthermore, compared to other carton sealing tapes, the tamper-evident seal will better safeguard shipments and products that are sensitive to moisture.
To make a strong barrier against high humidity, direct light, and severe temperatures, all you need is one strip of gummed paper tape.
3. FILAMENT TAPE
Filament tapes use fiberglass filaments imbedded in the adhesive. Glass fibers added to the tape improve its strength and inhibit elongation, enabling your boxes to endure the high forces encountered in transportation. Both kinds of filament tape are as follows:
One-way: single-woven and has one direction of fiberglass reinforcing
Two-way: cross-woven and reinforced in both directions by fiberglass
Both types are perfect for light to medium shipments due to their strong tensile strength. They tape are difficult to tear by hand, but they can be applied quickly and effectively with a filament tape dispenser. Filament tape is a cost-effective substitute for industrial packing, offering strong performance in heavy-duty sealing, strapping, and bundling applications.
4. MASKING TAPE
Easy-to-remove adhesive is backed by a thin backing of paper in masking tape. Masking tape, which is often used to shield surfaces from paint, might be a useful item to stock for your shipping group. Its lighter and thinner adhesion allows you to safely wrap different goods in bubble wrap or packing paper without needless delays or damage during the unpacking process. But you should not seal your boxes with masking tape. It cannot ensure a safe shipment and is not as robust as other packing tapes.
5. FLATBACK TAPE
Compared to masking tape, flatback tapes have a firmer hold since they are pressure-sensitive. Your workers can use the strong adhesive for a variety of tasks, such as splicing and tabbing. The majority of items are suitable for manual tearing or automated machinery use.
